Update Sharepoint not working

I'm using the compare source/target feature and updating a specific content type with the needed fields. However when I go to actually update Sharepoint - I get "Sharepoint Update Successful" but the columns are NOT present in the the content type.
Any suggestions?
The content type in question has other content types inherited from it. These "children" content types could be located in sub-sites or even in some lists. There are fields added to these "children" content types. Adding the same fields to the parent content type is not possible operation in this case when these fields exist in child content types.
In order to resolve this issue you need to create another content type hierarchy with right fields added, add these new content types to lists that need them and then use MetaVis Classifier to tag all existing items with the newly created content types. After this you can delete old content type hierarchy.
