Creating SharePoint Folders with Metadata in MetaVis Architect
SharePoint provides the ability for users to create folders inside many lists and libraries, but these folders do not support metadata. SharePoint does support this feature and this guide provides instructions on how to create folders with metadata fields using MetaVis Designer. Note: This guide assumes that you have already created a list or library that requires folders with metadata. If you have not done so, refer to the guide on Creating SharePoint Lists and Libraries prior to proceeding.
(1) Enable List and Inherited Content Types
In order to begin, Lists and Inherited Content types must be available in the diagram. If they are not displayed, enable them from the View menu.
(2) Create a new content type inherited from Folder
Locate the Folder content type in the diagram. From the palette, click on the Type icon and drop it near Folder. Name the new content type and add columns to represent the metadata that you need attached to the folder. Finally, create an inheritance from the new content type to Folder.
(3) Add the new content type to your list
Locate the list into which the new folder (and metadata) will be added. From the Content Types container in the Navigation screen drag the content type created in the previous step into your list.
(4) Update SharePoint
From MetaVis Designer, update SharePoint with the new objects.
(5) Verify that Content Types support in your List or Library is enabled
In your SharePoint environment, navigate to the list or library that you are working on. Proceed to the List/Library Setting and verify that Management of Content Types is enabled (Settings > Advanced Settings).
(6) New Folder
The new content type you created should be available from the New menu as a folder object. Any folder created using this object will contain fields from the new content type.
