Displaying LOOKUP relationships between Lists/Libraries

Thu, 01/29/2009 - 03:36 — GregNockolds

Is there a way to display/document the links that exist between Lists or Libraries as a result of LOOKUP columns having been created?

This would be useful for impact analysis, of changing a "looked up" column and also as a general audit of proper re-use of standard data definitions and domains across sharepoint.

TIA

Hi Greg,

We do not have this function currently but it sounds like the one that is interesting to have. It would be rather natural for Metavis Sharepoint Architect to display relationships between types and lists. It could be an optional view that will display these relationships so that they will not interfere with other lines on the diagram. We could even allow to create lookup attribute by dragging lists (or one of its columns) right to some lookup attribute rather than selecting referenced list from the drop down control.

We discussed today how to represent links to lists which are from parent sites. We could have virtual "dimmed" lists present of the diagram indicating that they are from some parent sites like we do it with content types that come from the parent sites. This way it would be possible to see a dependency that leads to some parent site. What could the other suggestions?

We will certainly add this function to one of our future milestones.

Thank you for the interest to our product and for the interesting suggestion.
