Allow custom groups

Tue, 01/27/2009 - 13:32 — Maarten van den...

I didn't found out how to create custom groups for Content Types and Site Columns. We usually create new groups (project name/customer name) for Content Types and Site Columns. I saw a Type Group property, but was not able to change it. Is it possible to make this property read/write.

I also think that this is a best practice: create custom groups for Content Types and Site Columns. So you leave the default SharePoint groups alone and don't touch them. All custom content added by you or your team is more reconizable.

Thank you for your comment.

We do support the creation of Custom Column Groups.
1) Make sure that Column Groups are visible by right-clicking on the "Column Groups" icon in the navigator (for the site that you are working on)
2) Make sure "All Column Groups" is enabled. If it is not, enable it.
3) You wiill find a new "Group" icon under the Entities pane.
4) Click on it once and then drop it anywhere in the diagram to create a new Column Group.

We will add the ability to change the Type Group property in a future release. In the interim, the same result can be achieved by dragging a column from one group to another in the Diagram pane (our roadmap also includes the ability to do the same action in the Navigation tree).

Here is a little addition to the comment above. MetaVis Architect does not allow to change Content Type Group for types defined in the parent sites (they should be edited in their sites) or for the types that came with the Sharepoint installation. It does allow though to change type group for the types local to the site (the field becomes writable and it presents list of type groups in this site). Metavis Designer does not allows yet to create new (or rename existent) type group. I agree that this is something that we should have in the product.
