Creating SharePoint Lists and Libraries in MetaVis Architect
Lists and Libraries are used by SharePoint to organize and manage content. Based on the type of List, SharePoint creates specific metadata. This metadata may be expanded and altered. MetaVis Architect can be used to create and maintain lists and their metadata. This guide will walk the user through the process of creating a list or library.
(1) Start the Create List Wizard
Select "List" from the Entities section of the palette and click on the diagram to start the Create List Wizard.
Note: If the List option is not available in the palette, enable All Lists from the View menu.
(2) Name and Template
Enter a unique name and select a list template from the drop-down field. Press "Next" to continue.
(3) Create List in SharePoint
Enter valid credentials and press Next. Press "Finish" to create the List in SharePoint. A progress bar indicating the status will be displayed. Once completed a message window will be generated. Confirm this message to continue.
Note: Unlike other objects, lists and libraries must be deployed to your SharePoint environment before they can be used in MetaVis Architect.
Note: When first created, you may find that working with a list in a diagram is difficult due to overlapping object. This is done to prevent diagrams from becoming too large. You can auto-arrange a specific list by right-clicking on the list name and selecting the Format>Arrange>Selection option.
(4) Working with Lists
MetaVis Architect imposes specific limitations on lists to comply with SharePoint behavior.
Here is what you can and cannot do:
- You can drag-n-drop any existing content type or column into the list
- You cannot remove or modify some reserved content types and columns (e.g. Folder Content Type, Document Created By column)
- You can remove or modify non-reserved content types and columns
- You cannot create a new content type within a list
- You can create a new column within a list
